Sometimes when one gets food poisoning, it can be difficult to figure out where exactly the illness came from. Sure, you could have gotten the stomach bug from a 3 a.m. kebab — then again, it could be from that terrible spinach meal you made when you decided to eat healthier. Both viable options, both equally likely to give you the runs.

However, sometimes, it’s really, really, embarrassingly easy to determine what exactly caused your upset stomach.

For example, Big Wig Tacos in Evanston, Illinois recently announced a new promotion: $1 burritos. Intrigued by the idea of a cheap Mexican meal, people flocked to the store. The restaurant even celebrated the high turnout on the day of the event with a TikTok video.

God, look at all the smiles! Surely nothing bad will come of such a frighteningly cheap dish! Now let me just take a big swig of coffee and—

Oh. Well, that was fast.

According to CBS News, this $1 burrito event is the suspected source of a norovirus outbreak that is now terrorizing Evanston. “Investigators have learned that people reported stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea after eating at Big Wig Tacos & Burritos during an event at which the restaurant offered $1 burritos to students from (Northwestern University),” reads the CBS News piece.

That’s not all. According to the University of Minnesota, other symptoms can include “low-grade fever or chills, headache and muscle aches.” But hey, at least you got a burrito for a few quarters!

For their part, Big Wig isn’t totally sold on the idea that their budget burritos are the source of this food poisoning, though CBS News notes that they are complying with the investigation. “We are not certain that the outbreak originated at our restaurant,” reads a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page. “Prior to the event, the Evanston Health Department completed a routine health inspection and found no issues with our establishment.”

Right, but then you sold meat for pennies, so that may have changed things. I don’t know, just a thought.

Anyway, the investigation into the restaurant is ongoing, but in the future, if you want to avoid food poisoning, you’re likely going to need to pay more than a dollar for your burrito.
